One of Sir Peter Scott's last paintings set to go under the hammer this month in Yorkshire saleroom

ALTHOUGH  far from being his most impressive work, this small-scale study of a red-breasted goose by Sir Peter Scott is likely to catch the eye of birders later this month.

It was one of his last works, having been painted in 1988,  the year before he died, aged 79.

Measuring just 9.5cm by 9cm, it is catalogued as Lot 1012 in a sale of British European and Sporting Art to be conducted by auctioneers Tennants at their sale room in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, on March 18

Because he was left-handed, it was easier for Sir Peter to depict birds, whether stationary or in flight, facing from left to right, but, with this study, it is the other way round.

The pre-sale estimate for the work, which is signed and framed, is £200-300
