Tetney Lock - scene of yesterday's tragedy

A MAN and a teenage boy have died following an accident in a village near the RSPB's Tetney Marshes reserve near Grimsby in North-east Lincolnshire.

Shortly after 1pm yesterday, a blue Mercedes 300 left the road and became submerged in water at Tetney Lock Road, Tetney Lock.

Emergency services, including police, crews from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, and EMAS were immediately dispatched.

Sadly, a 16-year-old boy and 40-old man in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Road diversions were not lifted until just before 3am today pending recover work and preliminary inquiries.

Located on the Louth Navigation Canal, Tetney Lock is a beauty spot popular with  birdwatchers visiting the RSPB's Tetney Marshes reserve to watch wading birds and raptors.

This morning, Lincolnshire police issued a statement which reads: "We appeal for anyone who may have information to come forward.

"We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle driving prior to the incident and captured it on dashcam or has footage of the accident  itself.

"Please check footage from the Laceby crossroads at Laceby, Grimsby, and the surrounding roads leading to the Tetney Lock Road area between 12:30pm and 1.33pm yesterday.

"At this stage it is not believed there were any other vehicles involved but we are keeping an open mind as the investigation progresses."

The statement adds: "If you can help, please call 01522 212316 and quote incident 190 of 6 January or email jared.thorp@lincs.police.uk and put 'Incident 190 of 6 January' in the subject line."
