FIRST IMAGES RELEASED OF PROPOSED NEW OBSERVATORY AT TOP BIRDING HOTSPOT

High hopes for super new Fair Isle bird observatory

FIRST artists' impressions have been released of how Fair Island bird observatory might look  after it has been  rebuilt in the wake of a devastating fire that destroyed the former building  in March last year.

Architects for the scheme are Glasgow-based ICA who, last week, submitted plans to Shetland Isles Council.

Once these have been validated by the council's planning department, they will be posted on the authority's website.

The aim is to create a research station  accommodation and catering facilities for a warden and his/her family plus up to 25 guests in an eco-friendly and well-appointed building - one that is fire proof.

ICA's lead architect, Steven Byrne, says it is a  "privilege" to work on the project.

Assuming there are no planning or construcion hitches, it is hoped the observatory building  could be ready for opening in summer or autumn of next year.
